This is a controversial subject amongst those in the Health and Fitness Industry. On one side you have people who believe you can get all the nutrients you need from your diet. I am of the opinion that you should take supplements to help you get the nutrients you need. However, I do not believe that everybody should start taking supplements.
If you are not willing to commit to changing your diet and living a healthier lifestyle, you should not buy supplements because chances are you will not take them consistently and you will end up wasting your money. For supplements to be effective they must be taken consistently and you must eat a healthy, balanced diet. Supplements are just as the name implies- a supplement, not a replacement for healthy eating and an active lifestyle.
With that said, if you are ready to take that next step you need to know which ones to take. First off, the staple of any supplement program is a good multivitamin and fish oil. A good multivitamin will not only make sure that you get all the nutrients you need to prevent you from getting sick, but it will contain the right amount of nutrients to help your body function optimally. Other supplements that will benefit your body include Calcium, Glucosamine, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D. If you are currently taking any medication, always be sure to talk with your doctor before taking any supplements. If you are not careful, the supplement could interfere with your medications.
You will also need to research the company from which you are purchasing the supplements. A good supplement company will be NSF certified.
